Gita Scroll privacy policy
Last updated: 28 October 2026
Gita Scroll is a reading app for the Bhagavad Gita on iPhone and Android. This page says what the app keeps on your phone, what leaves it, who receives that, and what you can switch off. It matches the app as built, and it is short on purpose.
The short version
- There is no account. You never give a name, email address, phone number or password.
- What you read, save and finish, and what you type in Ask, stays on your phone. What you write under "Other" during setup is sent as a usage event if usage sharing is on.
- Optional, anonymous usage events and crash reports go to two services. You can switch both off in Me > Settings.
- Purchases go through Apple or Google and RevenueCat.
- Gita Lock works on your phone. It never sends the names of the apps you choose, or which app is open, anywhere.
- No ads. No tracking. Nothing is sold.
Who is responsible
Gita Scroll is published by Aditya Vora ("the developer"). Contact: adityavora16@gmail.com.
What stays on your phone
These are saved only on your device, in the app's private storage:
- your language, text size, theme and other settings;
- the topics you picked;
- verses you saved, verses you read, your streak and chapter progress;
- whether Pro is on, as last confirmed by the store;
- your reminder time;
- what you type in Ask. It is matched to verses on your phone. The text is not stored after you leave, and it is never sent anywhere. Only a count of words and the matched topics may be sent as a usage event (see below).
- what you write under "Other" on the topics screen during setup. It picks your first verses on your phone. If Share anonymous usage is on, the text is also sent to Aptabase, without your name or any ID, so the developer can read what people are going through and improve the app. The note under the box says this before you type. Please leave out names and phone numbers.
Uninstalling the app deletes all of this.
What leaves your phone
| Service | What it receives | Why | Switch off? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aptabase (usage events, EU servers) | Short named events such as "verse saved" or "card viewed", with a verse number, counts, and your chosen language, whether Pro is on, the platform and app version. Aptabase adds your phone's operating system and version and your locale, and works out your country from the connection. It does not give the app a user ID, device ID or advertising ID and does not store IP addresses. The events cover: opening the app and onboarding steps, on Android which shared verse link or store page the app was installed from (from Google Play's install referrer), cards viewed, verses opened, saved, copied and shared, quiz answers, Ask counts, the text you write under "Other" during setup, settings changes, streaks, reminders, paywall and purchase steps, Gita Lock results, and errors shown. | To see which parts of the app are used and fix what is not. | Yes: Me > Settings > Share anonymous usage. |
| Sentry (crash reports) | When the app crashes or hits an error: the error and where it happened, the phone model, operating system and app version. No screenshots, no session replay, no names or typed text. | To find and fix crashes. | Yes, same switch. |
| RevenueCat (purchases) | An anonymous app user ID it creates, which products you bought or restored, and the receipt the store gives it. | To work out whether Pro is on and to restore purchases. | No. It is needed to sell and restore Pro. |
| Apple App Store / Google Play | Your purchase and subscription, handled by the store under its own terms. | To take payment. | n/a |
| Audio host (static file server) | The request for a recitation file, which includes your IP address and which file you asked for. No ID is added. | To play recitation. Files are kept on your phone after the first play. | Don't tap Listen. |
| Expo / EAS Update | When the app checks for a content or bug-fix update: your IP address, the platform and the app version. | So corrections to the text can reach you without a new download. | No. |
Usage events never contain: your name, email, an ID, what you typed in Ask (the only typed text they carry is what you write under "Other" during setup), the names of apps you lock, notification text, your location, contacts or photos. Verse numbers such as "2.47" are scripture references, not personal data.
If you turn off usage and crash reports, Gita Scroll stops sending both straight away. The switch does not stop RevenueCat, the audio host or update checks, because the app needs them to work.
The services above handle this data for the developer under their own terms. The developer does not sell it and does not use it for advertising.
Gita Lock
Gita Lock is optional and off until you turn it on. It shows a verse before an app you chose opens.
- On iPhone it uses Apple's Screen Time features (Family Controls, Managed Settings and Device Activity). You allow it when iOS asks, and you pick the apps with Apple's own picker. iOS gives Gita Scroll opaque tokens for the picks, not the apps' names. They are stored on your phone and in a storage area shared only between Gita Scroll and its three small Screen Time extensions.
- On Android it uses Usage access to see which app is in front and Display over other apps to show the verse. The package names of the apps you chose are stored in the app's private storage. A small notification shows while it is on, so Android keeps it running.
On both systems the check happens on the phone. The developer receives nothing about which apps you chose or which one you opened. The only things that may be sent as usage events are counts and results, for example "Gita Lock turned on for 2 apps" or "stayed" or "opened", with the verse number shown, and never the app's name. Those follow the same switch as other usage events.
You can turn Gita Lock off in Me > Gita Lock, and in iOS Settings > Screen Time or Android Settings > Special app access.
Permissions
| Permission | Used for | When it is asked |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications | The daily reminder, and on Android the Gita Lock running notification | When you turn on the reminder or Gita Lock |
| Screen Time (iPhone) | Gita Lock | When you turn on Gita Lock |
| Usage access, Display over other apps (Android) | Gita Lock | When you turn on Gita Lock, after an in-app explanation |
| Photos, add only | Saving a share image to your photos | When you tap save in the share screen |
The app does not use your microphone, camera, contacts, calendar, location or advertising ID.
Sharing a verse
When you share a verse as an image or text, it goes to the app you choose in the system share sheet (for example WhatsApp). The developer does not receive it. "Send on WhatsApp" opens WhatsApp with the verse text filled in. After that, WhatsApp's own policy applies.
How long data is kept
- On your phone: until you delete it or uninstall.
- Usage events: kept by Aptabase without any identity attached, so they cannot be matched back to you.
- Crash reports: Sentry keeps them for about 90 days (its default).
- Purchase records: kept by RevenueCat and the stores for as long as the law and their policies require.
Your choices and rights
Because the app has no accounts, the developer cannot look up "your" records. You can:
- switch off usage and crash reports in Me > Settings;
- turn off Gita Lock and the reminder;
- delete all on-device data by uninstalling;
- cancel a subscription in the App Store or Play Store (Settings > your name > Subscriptions; Play Store > Profile > Payments and subscriptions).
If you live in India, the EU or UK, or California, you also have the rights your law gives you, such as to ask what is held about you, to correct it, to delete it, and to complain to the regulator. Write to adityavora16@gmail.com and the developer will help with whatever is held and can be linked to you. For purchase records, Apple, Google and RevenueCat each have their own request routes.
Children
Gita Scroll is meant for teenagers and adults and is not directed to children under 13. It collects no personal information, with or without a child's age. If you think a child has sent personal information, write to adityavora16@gmail.com.
Where data goes
Aptabase uses servers in the EU. Sentry, RevenueCat, Expo and the stores process data in the United States and other countries. By using the app you accept that this data (which contains no name or contact detail unless you type one under "Other") may be processed outside India.
Support lines
A few verses show a quiet line with a helpline: Tele-MANAS 14416 in India, and 988 in the US and Canada. The app picks the line from your phone's region setting on the phone. It does not send your region anywhere.
Changes
If the app starts doing something new with data, this page changes first and the date at the top moves. Look there for the latest version.
